2/28/2017 District News: Week of 3/6/17BULLDOG BRILLIANCE MSS Students Skype with Soldiers in Afghanistan ![]() Main Street School students, who have been learning about the importance of being engaged citizens, participated in a schoolwide conversation with three soldiers who are stationed in Afghanistan. They spoke with 1st Lt. Michael Buckley, Captain Isaac MacMillen and Chief Warrant Officer Two Michael VonBehren via Skype on Feb. 14. The three soldiers and their troops were the recipients of Boodle Boxes, care packages that the students prepared for them over the holidays. Spearheaded by the school’s Boodle Box Leadership team, the students prepared the care packages as a way to thank them for their service and sacrifices for our country. Following the shipment of the Boodle Boxes, the fourth- and fifth-grade students engaged in thoughtful discussions around the school’s essential questions and enduring understanding about global citizenship. As a result, they generated a list of questions for the soldiers during their Skype session. To convey their message, the students placed more than 400 stickers, reading in part “While underage drinking and drug use is no one’s fault, prevention is everyone’s responsibility,” on pizza boxes at Tony's Pizzeria in Irvington and Capri Pizza & Pasta in Tarrytown. “The project took place last week in anticipation of the increased number of pizzas that were expected to be purchased for the Super Bowl,” said Jennifer Nunziato, advisor of the Positive Impact Club and student assistance counselor. “This was a great example of coordination in our District and community.” The Irvington Recreation Department provided transportation to both businesses with Nunziato chaperoning the students. Irvington About Safe Kids, a coalition established through a grant awarded to the Village of Irvington and Community Advisory Board, sponsored and provided the stickers. “Dr. Kristopher Harrison surprised the students at Capri Pizza and purchased a pizza to congratulate them on their hard work,” Nunziato said. “The owner of Tony's Pizzeria also provided the students with pizza, drinks and snacks as a token of his support for the project.” The Irvington Middle School Positive Impact Club is a leadership club that focuses on promoting healthy decision-making and spreading messages of prevention and awareness across the school and local community. Students had the opportunity to engage in a variety of self-directed play activities with their peers. The only requirement to play was that toys not have batteries or screens. Some of the games the students played included basketball, jump rope, Twister, Dominoes, Life, Trouble, Apples-to-Apples, Monopoly, Play-Doh, playing cards, blocks, board games and more. Other games and toys the children were allowed to bring to school and play with included dolls, trucks, cars, racetracks, empty cardboard boxes, markers, jigsaw puzzles and other social games. “At Dows Lane, we value the power of play and the impact free play can have on brain development and social-emotional learning,” Principal Deb Mariniello said. “Free play fosters creativity, inquiry and collaboration, and we continuously strive to build a balance between free play and rigorous learning experiences. When a balance is fostered, research shows that productivity and achievement are optimized.” Main Street School Principal Joyce Chapnick said the value of unstructured play has been extensively researched. “In an interview, Peter Gray, a research professor at Boston College, said that in unstructured play, children discover their passions, learn how to get along with one another, solve problems and control their emotions,” Chapnick said. “These are all crucial lessons that can only be learned through free, self-directed experience.” For more information about the day and to see a map of participants worldwide, visit www.globalschoolplayday.com. Throughout the week, the students – who have been studying about balance and motion in their science classes – practiced various circus tricks before showing off their newly acquired skills to parents, teachers and peers. In addition to the stilt walking and tightwire lessons, they were taught to climb and hang off aerial silks. They also had the opportunity to learn diabolo manipulation and plate spinning. “The circus experience brought to life the concepts the students have been reading about in class,” second-grade teacher Dina Lenhardt said. “They liked using their bodies to balance on the stilts and tightwire, and the aerial silks were also fun for them because it’s something they would never get to do on their own.” The Amazing Grace Circus performers provided a variety of engaging activities for the students to help them learn about balance and motion in a fun and interactive way. Their visit was generously sponsored through a grant from the PTSA.
