3/28/2018 District News: Week of 4/2/18BULLDOG BRILLIANCE Dodgeball Tournament Raises Awareness About Healthy Habits ![]() Students at Irvington High School participated in the iDODGE Dodgeball Tournament, held at the campus gymnasium on March 18, to raise awareness about the dangers of alcohol and drug use. Organized and led by members of the Positive Impact Club, including sophomores Ethan Cott, Jack Grados, Noah Heller, Josh Hunt, Joey Kashkin and Janeeta Shaukat and freshmen Eli Cott and Ian Schwam, the students incorporated antidrug messages in a variety of ways. Throughout the tournament, players on opposing teams tried to throw balls at each other while avoiding being hit themselves. They played each game with 10 different colored dodgeballs to represent different alcohol or drug statistics. At the end of each game, a student representative read the statistics over the loud speaker. “The event was a student-driven idea and a student-planned event with the goal of combining a fun sport with a learning opportunity around facts relating to alcohol, vaping, marijuana and other drugs,” said Jennifer Nunziato, the student assistance counselor at the middle school and high school and adviser of the Positive Impact Club. “Additionally, the event was designed to give students a weekend activity to show them that they can have fun without engaging in risky alcohol or other drug-related behavior.” The students, who created team T-shirts with the tagline “Don’t Do Drugs, Do Dodgeball,” said they hope to make the tournament an annual event. The event was sponsored by Irvington About Safe Kids, which is a coalition established through a grant awarded to the Village of Irvington and Community Advisory Board. Representing all sectors of the community, iASK-CAB works to motivate young people to make healthy, happy and responsible decisions. The students, who have been diligently examining this year’s case of the People v. Carson Conners and preparing to act as attorneys and witnesses, will present the prosecution side of the case against Rye Neck’s defense. “The students care a lot about their work and the rest of the team,” said Erik Weiselberg, the Mock Trial team coach and social studies teacher. “Team members put in a lot of individual work on their roles, reading the documents, memorizing witness’ roles and various objections that lawyers make. The pressure of the actual tournament brings out the best in students.” Mock trial is an academic competition in a courtroom setting that allows students to prepare and argue both the prosecution and defense sides of a case and compete against area students. As a result, they gain firsthand knowledge of the civil and criminal law and courtroom procedures. Through the competition, they also improve their listening, speaking, reading and reasoning skills. Organized by the New York State Bar Association, this year’s case, the People v. Carson Conners, is about a student who was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct after a teacher saw him pushing another student in a hallway. However, the defendant with poor grades claimed that the teacher purposely targeted him so he would not take a state-mandated ELA exam, the scores from which influence the teacher’s evaluation. Members of Irvington High School’s Mock Trial team include Isabella Berger, Julia Caldropoli, Ethan Chang, Max Edleman, Ben Flock, Sofia Garcia, Caleb Gilbert, Sophie LaSenna, Bailey Levin, Kalandra Marinopoulos, David Markowitz, Alexandra Powell, Alex Savino, Skylar Sloane and Alyssa Yamashita. They celebrated the arts, culture and history of the ancient civilization by working collaboratively with their peers in four different city-states. Throughout the day, the students created Greek art, competed in their own Olympics, engaged in an engineering challenge of boat building and enjoyed a Greek market-style lunch provided by the Irvington PTSA. They also studied the Greek influence on language today, danced with authentic Greek dancers, performed their own renditions of ancient Greek myths on stage, and used their knowledge of Greek history to follow clues and solve a series of puzzles. In addition, they took a virtual field trip to Greece using Google Expeditions, provided by the Irvington Education Foundation. “The students celebrated the culture of ancient Greece in a fun and exciting way,” said Jessica Doherty, a sixth-grade teacher and team leader. “They used content they learned in their classes to solve problems and engage in hands-on activities that can’t be done in a regular school day.” Students said they enjoyed the opportunity to learn more about the ancient Greek culture by sampling different types of food and experiencing different dance forms. They also said they learned how to collaboratively work with their peers and express their creativity through art. The celebration was made possible thanks to the support of the PTSA.
