6/13/2018 District News: Week of 6/18/18BULLDOG BRILLIANCE Three Destination Imagination Teams Compete at Global Finals ![]() Three teams from the Irvington Union Free School District – DI Dogs (fifth grade), #FOREVERMOUSTACHE (fifth grade) and the Wise-er Dolphins (sixth grade) – had an outstanding performance at the Global Finals, which were held in Knoxville, Tennessee, from May 22-26. The DI Dogs team placed 10th out of 39 teams, #FOREVERMOUSTACHE placed 19th out of 48 and the Wise-er Dolphins placed 12th out of 66. “We are so proud of all of our students who participated in DI,” said Nancy Woeckener, the District’s Destination Imagination coordinator. “The students who went to Global Finals did really well. It was an awesome experience to compete with students from around the country and world.” Global Finals is the culminating event of every Destination Imagination season. Through their participation in the program, the students are encouraged to take risks, focus and frame challenges while incorporating STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics), the arts and service learning. They learn patience, flexibility, persistence, ethics, respect for others and their ideas, and the collaborative problem-solving process. Members of the DI Dogs team include Main Street School fifth-graders Luke Armogan, Arya Bose, Mika Hughes, Emiliana Logan, Annie McFeetors, Shaleen Thaker and Kian Vasudev. For their scientific challenge, they explored scientific concepts used in amusement park attractions and created a Rube Goldberg simple machine that works off of a sequence of chain reactions. Members of the #FOREVERMOUSTACHE team include Main Street School fifth-graders Sawyer Chalsen, Charlotte Fuchs, Molly Fuchs, Minori Furtado, Marlo Gordon and Annelise Ishkanian. For their service learning challenge, the students were asked to identify, design, carry out and evaluate a project that addresses a need in a real community. They created the “Healthy Snack Week” project, for which they shared healthy-snack-themed trivia to campaign for healthy eating in their school. Members of the the Wise-er Dolphins team include Irvington Middle School sixth-graders Emma Jee, Katelyn Jee, Jack Kempler, Will Neubauer, Maren Piersol, Chloe Pisani and Carleigh Taylor. For their scientific challenge, the students created a working version of the old arcade game Whack-A-Mole for the audience using three scientific principles, electricity, magnetism/gravity/kinetic energy and a motorized pulley. The Irvington Education Foundation has generously supported the Destination Imagination coordinator. They spent more than nine hours digging, framing, creating molds, shaping concrete, laying the border, spreading mulch and raising the playground pieces into place. “It was a true community build with parents, teachers and staff of MSS and community members coming together to build the playground,” Principal Joyce Chapnick said. “Thank you to the amazing volunteers. Our students will have a new playground because of their generosity of time.” The project for the state-of-the-art, dynamic and inclusive playground has been generously supported by the Irvington Education Foundation and the community’s fundraising efforts. During the second community build, which will be held on June 9, volunteers will unload and unpack playground equipment, anchor base plates to concrete footers and hang basket swings to complete the project. The ribbon cutting ceremony for the new playground is scheduled for June 23 at 10 a.m. as part of the Celebrate Irvington Day events.
