9/27/2017 District News: Week of 10/2/17BULLDOG BRILLIANCE Fifth-Graders Dive into Hudson River Study ![]() Main Street School fifth-graders became scientists for the day when they collected data about the Hudson River at various stations set up along the river at Matthiessen Park on Sept. 18. As part of their science study, the students observed the environment to determine the wind’s direction and threw oranges in the water to determine the direction of the water current. They also tested the water’s temperature and turbidity and studied marine life by collecting shells along the shore. In addition, local historian Bob Connick and former high school principal Scott Mosenthal took the students on a journey through the history of the river and region. “As with anything hands-on, the students are motivated and excited to see up close the things we talked about in class, and that’s really the most powerful type of learning you can do,” teacher Michelle Griffin said. Griffin said the outdoor classroom experience allowed students to make real-life connections between what they’re learning in the classroom and what they’re doing by the river. “This is a nice opportunity for them to get to know the river and how it works, and it’s really something that’s in their backyard,” she said. “Whenever they come back by the river, they will have a different perspective and appreciation for it.” The goal of the study was to teach students the importance of environmental responsibility and the value of understanding their surroundings. The students will continue their studies of the river by sailing aboard the Hudson River Sloop, thanks to a grant from the Irvington Education Foundation. “Special thanks to all parent volunteers who supported the students throughout the day,” Principal Joyce Chapnick said. This is the second school year that Irvington High School students have received the positive messages. Last year, members of the Positive Impact Club at the high school coordinated the project at the beginning of the school year, while the PTSA coordinated it around midterms and the police department led the project at the end of the school year. “It has been a rotating effort to involve as many students, parents and community members as possible,” said Jennifer Nunziato, student assistance counselor and advisor of the Positive Impact Club. “The Post-its continue to hang on the lockers, and the project seems to be well-received by the students and staff of Irvington High School.” This year, Irvington Police Detective and Youth Officer Michael Toolan organized the project. Police officers wrote encouraging messages, such as “you matter,” “you are loved,” “you are incredible” and “you can do it, yes you can” on Post-it notes, while members of the varsity football team placed them on the lockers throughout the building prior to the start of the school year. As the student assistance counselor, Nunziato works to enhance positive and healthy decision-making, as well as reduce the factors that put students at risk for alcohol and other drug use. Det. Toolan is a board member of Irvington About Safe Kids, which is a coalition that represents all sectors of the community — parents, students, educators, law enforcement officials, medical professionals, businesspeople and more — and works to motivate youth to make healthy, happy and responsible decisions. With books and school supplies in tow, students were ready to learn, grow and seek new academic opportunities as they entered their classrooms. “There is a great deal of excitement across the district as a result of the arrival of our students,” Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kristopher Harrison said. “The faculty, staff and administration are motivated to share in many enriching experiences with our students and are dedicated to making this a memorable school year.” Teachers at Dows Lane Elementary School and Main Street School greeted their students with smiles, helped them organize their school supplies and guided them through their expectations for the year. Meanwhile, teachers at the middle and high school also warmly welcomed back students. Irvington High School students jumped in with a regular full day of classes on the first day of school, while the halls at Irvington Middle School were buzzing with chatter as eighth-graders teamed up with sixth-graders for various first-day-of-school activities, which were designed to help the younger students make a smooth transition into their new school. Students were treated to a PTSA-sponsored barbecue in the courtyard and later participated in a scavenger hunt that sent them on an adventure around the building.
