10/25/2016 District News: Week of 10/31/16BULLDOG BRILLIANCE Irvington Students Were Scientists for "Day in The Life of The Hudson River Estuary" ![]() On October 20th, at Matthiessen Park, Irvington’s 6th graders were "scientists for a day" and worked with students from the high school’s AP Environmental Science and Marine Science classes, and with Irvington 8th grade volunteers to collect and analyze real data from the field during hands-on exploration of the Hudson River Estuary. This annual NYS Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) event connects students with the Hudson River and New York Harbor. Approximately 4,700 students and teachers, representing about 100 elementary, middle and high schools, and colleges worked at sites from New York City to Troy. The Day in the Life of the Hudson River Estuary event gives students the chance to experience the tidal Hudson River firsthand, conduct their own research about this ecosystem, and learn how scientists are working to protect the river. The NYS DEC’s Hudson River Estuary Program helps prepare students to become stewards of the river, a vital natural resource.
