12/12/2017 District News: Week of 12/18/17BULLDOG BRILLIANCE Dows Lane Students Donate Supplies to School in Puerto Rico ![]() Students and staff at Dows Lane Elementary School are spreading kindness by assisting students who were affected by Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico. They have donated more than 200 pounds of schools supplies to the Juana Colon School in Comerio, Puerto Rico. “I hope our students took away the simple lesson of how good it feels to give and felt pride in the amazing job that they all did,” said Laurel Warager, a first-grade teacher who spearheaded the initiative. “For some, this may be one of their first experiences in what it means to be a global citizen.” Throughout the month of November, which also coincided with the Dows Lane’s Character Education theme of taking action, the students collected pencils from kindergartners, glue sticks from first-graders, markers from second-graders and notebooks from third-graders. Then, the supplies were dropped off with representatives from Move to Empower, a nonprofit organization, who delivered them to the Juana Colon School on Dec. 4 and 5. “In the aftermath of Hurricane Maria, the Juana Colon School was left with more than 10 feet of water,” Warager said. “Virtually everything was destroyed. Through our partnership with Move to Empower, we were able to provide support and enable the school to get back on its feet. The teachers were overwhelmed with our generosity.” Warager added that Principal Deborah Mariniello’s support was key to Dows Lane’s success. NOMINATING COMMITTEE VOLUNTEERS NEEDED ![]() Hello Irvington School Community! Volunteer to be on this year’s Nominating Committee! Nominating Committee Member Page The Nominating Committee’s job is to nominate one person to fill each of the nine upcoming openings on the Executive Committee for the July 1, 2018-June 30, 2020 term. (Those openings are: two Co-Presidents, one Executive VP, one VP for Community Outreach, one VP for DL, one VP for MSS, one VP for IMS, one VP for IHS, and the Secretary.) Following the vote to appoint the Nominating Committee members at our General Membership meeting in January, the committee will begin its work, and will present the slate of nominees for a vote at our General Membership meeting in June. Since this way of filling the Executive Committee openings is new to our PTSA, another of the committee’s jobs will be to develop the policies and procedures that the committee will follow to fill the Executive Committee openings, both this year, and for future Nominating Committees. As such, we’re not sure how much time this will take this year, but the committee would meet at least one time per month from February through May, and committee members would formulate and implement committee procedures, including those for nominee recruitment and selection. The 11-member Nominating Committee will consist of:
Even if you’re on the Nominating Committee, you can still apply to fill an Executive Committee opening, so if you’ve been dreaming of taking over for one of us, please don’t let it stop you from applying to be on the Nominating Committee. From among the applicants, the Executive Committee will choose the 4 general members based on whether applicants are currently members of the PTSA and whether and in what capacity they volunteer for the PTSA or other organization. If you have any questions, please write: irvingtonnyptsa@gmail.com. Apply today to be on this year's Nominating Committee: Nominating Committee Member Page!
