Pencil Trick Sharpens Students' Physics Knowledge
Dows Lane Elementary School second-graders, who are learning about the key principles of physics, explored the concepts of balance, counterbalance and stability by balancing a pencil on its point.
As part of the experiment, the students could only use a Popsicle stick, bendable wires and two clothespins to balance a pencil.
“They had to figure it out without putting the clothespins on the stick or pencil,” second-grade teacher Karen Carlson said. “They needed to use what they had learned about counterbalance and make sure the pencil was stable.”
Carlson added that even though it was a difficult task, her students persevered through the challenge, which further developed their critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

The Irvington PTSA Brick Drive is back! Our goal is to add 100 more bricks to our IMS/IHS patio by graduation.
For each brick you buy, from now through January 31, 2017, your name will be added to a raffle for 1 free 4” x 8” brick with a small paw print logo.
Buy a brick for yourself, your current student, your grad, your favorite staff member, or as a dedication.
Proceeds from the sale of the engraved bricks will be used to create lovely outdoor spaces on the campuses of the Irvington schools that reflect the wonderful educational experiences happening inside the school buildings.
