3/13/2018 District News: Week of 3/19/18BULLDOG BRILLIANCE Fifth-Grader Named Geography Bee Champion at MSS ![]() Main Street School held its ninth annual Geography Bee on March 9 when a group of 10 fourth-graders and 26 fifth-graders answered questions covering all facets of geography in the United States and the world. The competition lasted for nine rounds before going into an elimination round and a championship round. Fifth-grader Mohun Desai was crowned champion after correctly identifying the Philippines as the Asian island country where the Mount Pinatubo volcano eruption occurred in 1991. Fifth-grader Shaleen Thaker was named runner-up. Both students will be acknowledged at a future Board of Education meeting. “Congratulations to our winner and runner-up,” Principal Joyce Chapnick said. “We are so proud of all of the students who participated. We applaud all of our finalists for participating in this exciting event.” A total of 127 students participated in the pre-bee qualifying round before the 36 finalists were identified. Moderators included Courtney Geelan, an Irvington High School teacher and social studies department chairperson, and retired Irvington High School Principal Dr. Scott Mosenthal. The event was made possible thanks to the generous support of the PTSA. Through our Training Workshops, volunteers will learn about the artist, the elements of art, art project(s), and how to present to the students. We welcome previous and new volunteers to join us. One Tuesday a month, for about an hour will afford you the opportunity to help make a difference. Just some of the improvements made because of the leadership of the Site Committees are: Revitalizing Recess, Imagination Playground and the Peaceful Playground at Dows Lane; the development of the Community Garden, the Community Playground and improvements to indoor/outdoor recess at Main Street; creation of the Insider’s Guide to IMS, making revisions to the Student Handbook and recommendations for beautification of the Middle School, and enhancing the senior internship experience and the development of the Core Value Awards program at the High School. Main Street School, the Middle School and the High School are each in need of one (1) additional Site Committee Member.
