3/14/2017 District News: Week of 3/20/17BULLDOG BRILLIANCE Sixth Graders Celebrate Ancient Greece ![]() Irvington Middle School sixth-graders, who have been studying about ancient Greece’s geography, government and culture, participated in an authentic celebration of the civilization on March 1. They worked together within the four different city-states – Athens, Corinth, Olympia and Sparta – to participate in a variety of hands-on activities that focused on different aspects of discovering how the ancient civilization influences daily life today. As part of the activities, they learned about Greek root words, created Greek art, built boats, performed Greek myths, hosted an archeological dig to uncover treasures from the past and created miniature Greek columns. They competed in their very own Olympics under the supervision of teachers Brian Agosti and Kate Becker. They also baked authentic Greek cookies and enjoyed a Greek market-style lunch, thanks to the PTSA. “The students were happily engaged and loved the day,” said teacher Carol LaBella, who planned the event along with teachers Jessica Doherty and Deborah Schofield. “It was so rewarding for us as teachers to be a part of their learning in such a special way.” Students said they enjoyed participating in the activities and learned a lot about how people in ancient Greece lived their lives. They said they found artifacts during the archeological dig and discovered how they may have been used at the time. They also said they were surprised to discover that the columns were built without nails and were perfectly aligned.
