4/23/2018 District News: Week of 4/30/18BULLDOG BRILLIANCE Middle School Students Raise Money for Schools in Africa ![]() Irvington Middle School students recently joined efforts to raise money for a great cause and support literacy in Africa. During their annual Mardi Gras celebration, they raised $400 to benefit the Fund for African Relief and Education, which provides uniforms for students and books for middle school libraries in Senegal. The students raised the money by selling donated gifts, including pants from Senegal and Eiffel Tower toothbrushes from Paris, along with Mardi Gras beads and sweets. They also participated in a pajama day celebration and were treated to a croissant breakfast. “Mardi Gras is an important holiday in French-speaking countries,” French teacher and French Club adviser Deanna Tessler said. “This was the 15th year that our middle school students have held a schoolwide celebration and the eighth consecutive year that we’ve raised money for FARE.” As a way to honor the students’ efforts, Tessler has displayed in her classroom a framed picture and a scarf, which she received from a group of students in Senegal last year. In their letter, the students expressed their gratitude for Irvington’s generosity and ongoing support. SPRING LUNCHEON Friday, May 4 ![]() Time is running out.
