Two Seniors Awarded National Merit Scholarships
Irvington High School seniors Zoe Mermelstein and Clara Montgomery were named 2017 National Merit Scholarship winners and will each be awarded a $2,500 scholarship. They were chosen from 15,000 talented students nationwide who competed for 7,500 prestigious scholarships worth more than $33 million.
"This is such a tremendous accomplishment,” Principal David Cohen said. “They have each worked so hard throughout high school and we are incredibly proud of this recognition for two truly deserving students."
Mermelstein, who will attend Brown University in the fall, and Montgomery, who will attend Yale University, were selected as scholarship winners based on a variety of criteria, including their outstanding academic record, a written essay, two sets of test scores, a high school official’s written recommendation and information about their activities and leadership.
The two students entered the competition in 2015 when they, along with 1.6 million other juniors in approximately 22,000 high schools nationwide, took the qualifying test.
