Committee and Program Descriptions

Authors & Illustrators: Accompany authors and illustrators as they speak to students; help coordinate the sale and distribution of their signed books.
BFF/Families in Need: Work with the IUFSD Social Worker and Irvington Recreation Department to facilitate need-based giving in the community throughout the year.
Book Fair: Assist with setting up and arranging books, collecting money, and helping students in book selection. Fall (DL/MSS) Spring (IMS/IHS). Help needed for a couple of days during school hours.
Eyes on Art: Present discussions in the classroom on a selected artist’s work and the elements of art. No prior art training is necessary – volunteers will be trained. Usually expected to go into the classroom twice per semester. Fall & Spring
Diversity & Inclusion (new for 2018-2019): Help organize and run events and programs to promote diversity and inclusion in the IUFSD community.
Graduation Reception: Help organize, set up and clean up reception following the high school graduation. Volunteers also needed to provide food donations. Spring
Harlem Wizards: Help with set up and work at the exhibition basketball game between the Harlem Wizards and Irvington’s school faculty. Help is also needed to buy supplies and make posters before the event. Fall (November 2019)
Hospitality: Provide baked goods for Open House in September and lunch for Staff Appreciation Day in May. Fall & Spring
International Culture (new for 2018-2019): Help organize and run events and programs to promote international culture in the IUFSD community.
Legislative Strategic Advisory: Help educate and inform the PTSA and the community about state, federal and local policies that affect our students. Learn more here.
Library (MSS): Assist with Birthday Book Club, Parent/Child Book Club and PARP (Parents As Reading Partners) Night. Ongoing
Membership: Help recruit members online and at events and coordinate membership data with the NYS PTA.
New Families: Organize get-togethers and school breakfasts to help families new to the district meet other families. Fall
Photo Day: Help move students through individual and group photo shots. Expected to help during October photo day and make-up day in December. Fall/Winter
Preschool Carnival: Help plan, coordinate and run activities before and during the day of the event. Jobs for everyone! Spring (May 2020)
Safe Routes to School/Walking School Bus: Help organize weekly walking school bus and handout prizes on occasion. More info here. Fall/Spring
Science Fair: Help plan, coordinate and run the district-wide Science Fair. Typically held in March.
Shopping Fundraisers: Help promote and coordinate the PTSA Amazon Smile program, the Box Tops program, and the DeCicco's Rewards program.
Special Needs: Assist with informational meetings and events. More info at Special Needs Committee. Ongoing
Spelling Bee and Geo Bee: Help plan, coordinate and run the Bees. Fall and Spring
Spirit Wear: Help sell a new, colorful line of Irvington spirit wear at school and community events throughout the year. Ongoing (Spirit wear will be sold at about 6 events throughout the year)
Spring Luncheon: Volunteers needed to assist in arranging raffles and prize baskets, or soliciting vendor donations, or creating invitations, or publicity and decorations. This is the PTSA's largest fundraiser - many hands are needed! Spring (May 2020)
Square 1 Art: Help with compiling and distributing order forms and child-created artwork in this nationally recognized craft program. Spring
Student Directory: coordinate with district, PTSA Exec Committee and printer to facilitate this helpful communication tool
Talent Show and Art Gallery: Help organize talent, coordinate rehearsals, help run the actual show, sell snacks, and distribute programs at this MSS evening event. Curate an art gallery for art created by MSS students. Gallery is open during the week of the talent show. Fall
Used Book Sale: Help organize the community used book sale; sorting books as donated and/or helping the days of the sale. Winter & Spring. Sale is in May.
Voter Registration & Education: Encourage potential voters to register and vote on election days in person or by absentee ballot Registration efforts are throughout the year at community events & voting day efforts include visual and written reminders to vote. Coordinate candidate panels as needed. Ongoing. Help needed to Get Out the Vote - usually a couple of hours around elections. More info here.
Winter Festival: Share your ideas and help with boutique, activities, performances, and community participation. The first Saturday in December at the Main Street School. Winter (December 2019)
Yearbook: Coordinate with the yearbook company, promote the sale of the yearbook, and organize its distribution. Ongoing
6th Grade Greek Day: Help set up, decorate and/or serve food at the Greek Day Event. Spring
8th Grade Moving Up Reception: Help organize, set up and clean up reception following moving-up ceremony. Spring (June 2020)
