Our Mission
The Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Committee’s mission is:
- To foster an inclusive community in which every student feels safe, welcomed and is able to thrive.
- To strengthen the Irvington School District community by fostering cross-cultural connections and promoting understanding, acceptance and appreciation among students of different backgrounds.
- To represent the diversity and inclusion concerns of Irvington School District families with school administrators, teachers, school bodies and community leaders as needed.
Our Vision
We envision a school community where:
- Kids feel valued and respected regardless of their race, gender, class, culture, religion, appearance or sexuality.
- Kids are proud of themselves, their family, and their culture, placing those things neither above or below those of others.
- Parents and children have a viable method and means to voice their concerns, and share stories of discrimination, without judgement or recrimination.
- Teachers and administrators enthusiastically embrace and promote diversity and inclusion.
- Teachers and administrators explicitly and non-defensively consider and accommodate non-Euro-centric viewpoints and perspectives in school lessons and activities.
- Teachers and administrators receive formal training on diversity and inclusion, especially in regard to how to handle acts of discrimination.
- Teachers and administrators lean in to difficult issues related to diversity and inclusion, in an honest, age- appropriate and productive manner.
- Residents and visitors are treated with equal dignity and respect, particularly by local law enforcement and government.
- Diverse people are actively valued and welcomed and their inclusion is fostered.
