Neurodiversity Celebration Week

he PTSA SCAFLD (Supporting Children and Families with Learning Differences) Committee is excited to kick off Neurodiversity Celebration Week, a worldwide initiative that challenges stereotypes and misconceptions about learning and developmental disabilities. 

Neurodiversity is the idea that people experience and interact with the world around them in many different ways; there is no one "right" way of thinking, learning, and behaving; and differences are not viewed as deficits.

​All week, the SCAFLD Committee will host events and activities to bring our community together and embrace and celebrate each other's learning, thinking and behavioral differences while promoting acceptance, tolerance, and understanding of people who are different.

Neurodiversity Celebration Week Highlights

• All Week: Dows Lane and Main Street School classrooms will receive goody bags with age-appropriate books with neurodiverse themes, sensory fidgets and information to help classroom teachers promote understanding and acceptance of oneself and others. The goody bags will be packaged and delivered by our District’s Vocational Independence Program (VIP) students program.
• All Week: Join our Facebook group for fun and engaging activities posted daily to help families promote conversations and acceptance of neurodiversity. 
• Wednesday, Mar. 23 at 7PM:  Dr. Donna Henderson and Dr. Sarah Wayland, renowned psychologists specializing in children with learning differences will share 10 Tips to Make Family Life Easier via a Zoom lecture for parents. RSVP here for the ZOOM link and presentation.
• Sunday, Mar. 27 at 9AM - 1PM: The SCAFLD Committee will have a table at the Irvington Farmers Market at Main Street School. Children can participate in craft activities to promote individuality, self-acceptance and acceptance of others; while parents can browse our curated selection of books devoted to celebrating Neurodiverse learners.
