Class of 2022: Apply for a PTSA Scholarship

For decades the Irvington NY PTSA has awarded scholarships to graduating seniors who have made a commitment to continuing their education. This year, we’ve doubled our investment in our scholarship program and revamped the application process to make it more inclusive and easier than ever to be considered. 

With one easy-to-complete form, graduating seniors can apply to be considered for all of the following awards:

PTSA Scholarships (5 awards @ $4000 each)

• The PTSA is awarding $4000 scholarships to five seniors with a diverse range of talents, accomplishments and goals.
• We’re looking for students who are determined, ambitious and goal-oriented in ANY of the following areas: athletics, academics, art, music, community service, peer-to-peer support, and technical and vocational careers. 
• Students with or without financial need are encouraged to apply. 

Eileen Fisher Award (1 award @ $2,500)

• Awarded to a female student who demonstrates leadership aptitude at school or within the community.

Michele Buell Memorial Scholarship (1 award @ $2,000)

• Awarded to a student who exemplifies Michele’s traits including active school involvement, working behind the scenes without the need for recognition, and a steadfast commitment to volunteering within the school and local community. 

Who’s eligible?
All graduating Irvington High School seniors are eligible and welcome to apply. Whether you’re pursuing a four-year college degree, attending a two-year institution or taking part in technical or vocational training after graduation, you qualify for these awards and the Committee would love to have your application! Please share a little about your plans in your Essay Question responses.

How it works

• Scholarship applications are reviewed by an independent committee composed of community members who do not have children in the Irvington School District. 
• Each applicant is eligible to receive only one scholarship from the PTSA. 
• Awards are paid directly to the recipient upon successful completion of the first semester of college or technical or vocational training program.
• Applications are accepted between February 1 and Apr 15, 2022
• Winners will be announced in June.
• Applications are submitted online via Google Form. More details on how to apply are below.

How to apply

In order to be considered for an award, you’ll need to submit an application. Here’s how:

Step 1: Ensure you’ve reviewed all the details on this page regarding the scholarship and application. If you have questions, be sure to email [email protected]. 

Step 2: Get a letter of recommendation. Please ask for a letter of recommendation from a trusted adult who can speak to your level of involvement in/or your commitment to your chosen activity/activities. The letter might come from a teacher, a coach, a club advisor, theater director, mentor, religious leader, etc. The letter should be 300-500 words in length and should include:

• length of time and capacity in which the supporter has known the applicant
• applicant's strength of character
• how the applicant has demonstrated a commitment to his or her activity
• why the supporter believes the applicant should be considered for the scholarship

Step 3: Draft your responses to the open-ended questions. You can access a Google Doc with the questions here, and use it to prepare your answers. Later when you submit your application form, you can copy and paste your answers into the form itself.
